Since this is a new site I thought I would make my first post as a little introduction, who I am, what I do, and what I aspire to do. Before I get to me, here’s a little run down on the concept of the site as well as my vision for how sites like this will impact social media on the internet.
With the boom of social communities across the web in the last 5 years, it is easy for web developers to start to think what is the next step for social interaction through the web. Like everything on the internet, social communities seem to have reached their max potential (Millions of Users) and will probably be replaced or at least changed in the near future. In order to try and stay ahead of the always changing curve of internet technology, I have decided to create a profile page on a private domain (benblodgett.com) and use it as a portal to collaborate all my information, work, and social-business networks.
My vision is that eventually social networks will be obsolete (3-5 years down the road), and people will begin to search for other mediums to promote, connect, and most importantly control their online identity. My reasoning for the destruction of social networks is that they are getting over crowded and filled with spam. The classic evidence lies in the short life of MySpace. Being one of the founders of social networking on the internet MySpace grew exponentially quick and became one of the most popular sites on the internet. This just simply didn’t last however, marketers and promoters got all over the network and began harvesting connections and mass messaging which exploited the real users. When users become frustrated they begin to migrate to other mediums for their day to day socializing, and Mark Zuckerberg provided that medium with Facebook.
Recently we are seeing similar privacy issues with Facebook as they allowed their profiles to be indexed by search engines and therefore private information became globally publicly available. I think this trend will continue with all social networks whether we are talking about LinkedIn, Facebook, MySpace, Plaxo, etc. Eventually these places become targets for spam marketers. The question is how long until the average internet user will be able to create their own profile on a privately controlled domain and server? I have to say we are almost there. Think about all the recent advances in content management tools, and the wide availability of affordable hosting packages. All the ducks are in a row to transform the internet into an openly publicized medium. Hosting is cheap, setup for intuitive content management systems are well documented and seamless, and social networks are becoming over run.
So here is BenBlodgett.com my profile for the social network known as the Internet. I’ll be brief with my background as its basically what this site is about…
I am a web entrepreneur who focuses on connecting and streamlining the power of the internet with business applications to provoke top level efficiency in business processes. I was invited into the web population at an early age I believe around 1995 when at 8 years old I began working with an Internet Service Provider (ISP). At this time the world was still on dial up and the web was a very young place, much like me! I stayed involved in web technology pretty much from then on. Created numerous e-commerce solutions for personal gain, my success here was based on finding cheap drop shippers and then selling for profit on sites like E-Bay and Amazon. I eventually graduated to creating self sufficient e-commerce sites using platforms and custom programmed systems. This provided the intial capital I needed to move myself to Miami, Florida after high school to further my education and see what I could do with hospitality and entertainment promotion.
